What do you want to do after college graduation?
"After college graduation, I plan on attending Medical School. Through this schooling I will gain the knowledge and experience needed to become a great physician. As a physician I plan to open up a clinic and start my mission that will change my community."
Ali Hammoud
What kind of doctor do you wish to become and how do you want to use your degree?
"My goal is to be a physician who is engaged in medical research. As such, I want to go into academic medicine so that I can teach, research, and engage in a clinical practice. As an undergraduate at the University of Michigan I had the unique opportunity to be a teaching assistant. The feeling of mentoring students through their formative years is something that I look forward to experiencing throughout my career as a physician. I also want to conduct research as a physician, and this stems from my experience conducting research at Michigan Med as an undergrad. It is very important to me that I make a lasting impact on the field of medicine by making a contribution to the literature. Of course, though, I primarily want to become a doctor because I want to engage in clinical practice. Knowing the impact doctors can have on patients, both emotionally and physically, has motivated me to be a physician from a young age. I am not yet sure what specialty I might like to go into, so I plan on to entering medical school with an open mind and figuring that out along the way."

How has being admitted to U-M and receiving the Brehm Scholarship helped you reach your goals?
"As a child and teenager, I always dreamed of going to a top educational institution, especially the University of Michigan, but I also believed my chances of attending were very small. I had little faith in myself, and I thought that even if I did get in, I could not afford it. Thankfully, receiving the remarkable Brehm Scholarship has strengthened my confidence and has helped me achieve my most important goal. By relieving me of the financial burdens that come along with attending college, I no longer have to worry about how expensive tuition is and whether or not it will get in the way of my education."

What kind of doctor do you wish to become?
"One theme that I've come to appreciate and one that I've tried to live by is to pay it forward. As a underclassman in undergrad, I learned to ask questions and to seek help from others, and I'm genuinely grateful for the guidance I received. As an upperclassman, I made it a point to help others with the same difficulties that I went through. As a physician, I hope to continue to build on this theme and to give back to my various communities by providing compassionate care to my patients, and by using my experiences to help facilitate the experiences of others."

Why Michigan?
"Since childhood, attending the University of Michigan has been a key goal and dream of mine. Receiving the Brehm Scholarship has helped me realize that not only have I achieved this goal, but I have surpassed it and I cannot feel more grateful and accomplished. I am not only relieved of the financial burden of my education; I am now inspired to give back to my community in the same way Mr. and Mrs. Brehm have. The Brehm Scholarship has helped me develop self-discipline, leadership skills, and confidence. Go Blue!"

What advice do you have for Fordson high school students who wish to be selected for the Brehm Scholarship?
"Being admitted into The University of Michigan has opened many new and exciting opportunities for me, including numerous study programs helping me achieve my goals in all the courses I take. The classes I really look forward to taking are mainly history courses, since I am pursuing a degree in history. I think the ultimate reason I chose The University of Michigan is the plethora of opportunities available for everyone to seize. My advice for future Fordson students who wish to be selected for the Brehm Scholarship is to be yourself; make your application highlight all the hard work you do to better yourself and your community. After I graduate, I aspire to attend medical school and specialize in cancer research."

Why Michigan?
"When I heard about the University of Michigan, it piqued my interest. I learned that at Michigan I would have the advantage of interacting with scientists and high-level scholars of international renown, I would be able to interact with gifted peers who have a passion for scholarship, and I would have an incredibly rich academic experience that went beyond my interests. Not only would I be able to gain hands-on experience in courses and labs, I would also study abroad, giving me a privilege few of my peers recieve. I knew I wanted to be part of the tradition of its educational excellence. Michigan gives me what I’m looking for—intelligent, like-minded students sharing a passion for my field of study."

What advice do you have for Fordson high school students who wish to be selected for the Brehm Scholarship?
"Some advice I have for Fordson students who wish to be selected for the Brehm scholarship is to delve into whatever it is they choose to do at Fordson. Be passionate about the clubs you join and the sports you play, and that passion will not only be clearly identified in your UM application, it will make your high school experience and journey to Michigan all the better. In regards to academics, stay focused on the long run and depend on nobody but yourself. This will help build lifelong study skills right from the start, encourage discipline, and will cultivate the ability to beat the academic challenges to come. Most importantly, be honest. Hard work and honesty will always be rewarded."

What do you want to do after college graduation?
"My ultimate aspiration is to attend the University of Michigan Medical School. Since I was young, I was always enlightened and inspired by the medical community from how it affected the greatest influential person in my life, my grandmother. As a child, seeing her constantly medicated and frequently carried out to ambulances left me wishing I could do more to help her. She passed away during the beginning of my junior year, but her legacy of medical intervention still lives on in my heart. My grandmother had this amazing ability to gather everyone she loves, and by everyone, I literally mean everyone. Doctors and engineers in my family, and even my younger brother, would run to her bedside to offer aid and give medication or administer shots. Medicine became such an integral part of my life and still continues to be fervent in my ambitions. I hope to continue my efforts and goals to the medical field, especially in the field of Gynecology, and to open a clinic or a more specific medical center to help women like my grandmother receive the best aid possible."

Why Michigan?
"When I was six, I was chanting “Go Blue!”, by middle school I had the fight song memorized, and by high school my wardrobe consisted of piles of Michigan gear. My older siblings, having attended the university, opened my eyes to the amazing campus life at Michigan and showed me all it has to offer. This included one of the greatest student support systems around and an education that surpasses any public university in the country. It was a dream for me to attend the University of Michigan. Aside from the family legacy, I have never felt more at home than I do when I am on the Michigan campus. The atmosphere is positive and I feel like I have the potential to reach all my goals with the help of the amazing faculty at the University of Michigan."

"The better question is why not Michigan? No other university offers the same college experience that Michigan does. It offers the perfect balance between both academics and social life, and offers a diverse and unique campus experience to its students. I fell in love with the university and the idea of attending it the first time I ever visited it and ever since then it has been my goal to one day hold the title of being called a Wolverine."
